Travel Light and Leave Your Laptop at Home
(ARA) - The travel season is officially here, and busy professionals
are taking trips around the globe in search of some much needed
rest and relaxation. However, more often than not, business people
need to check in on work and access their computers while traveling,
even while they're on vacation. Whether it's to quickly check e-mail
or send a file to a colleague or friend, the need to stay connected
to one's computer is increasing.
Laptop computers have often been the traveling professional's friend,
giving them access to important data from any location. But increases
in airport security and carry-on baggage restrictions, in addition
to the constant threat of laptop theft, are causing many travelers
to find a simpler alternative to packing a laptop. For those looking
to leave the laptop behind, remote access software is one solution.
Remote access software allows individuals to stay connected to the
full contents of their computers without lugging a laptop along,
making travel more efficient and less worrisome.
According to travel technology expert Christopher Elliott, there
are several remote access solutions available: "PCAnywhere and Laplink
have been available for sometime, but there is a new Web-based service
that I especially like called GoToMyPC, because it is extremely
fast, easy and secure. Additionally, unlike the other solutions,
GoToMyPC does not require software installation every time you want
to access and control your computer from another location."
GoToMyPC allows fast, easy and secure access to one's office or
home PC from any Web browser, completely eliminating the need for
a laptop. Travelers can go to any Internet café, hotel business
center or other location with an Internet connection and instantly
have access to the entire contents of their computers. It is extremely
easy to use and can be set up on a person's PC in a matter of minutes.
Users simply download the software onto their PC before leaving
for their trip and keep their computers on and connected to the
Internet.
To log in, users go to the GoToMyPC Website: www.gotomypc.com and
enter their user names and passwords. Multiple passwords, user authentication
and screen blanking of the host computer make it extremely secure.
The service can be purchased on a monthly or annual plan for as
low as $19.95 per month. A free trial is available on the company's
Web site.
"In a recent poll of our users, we discovered just how indispensable
GoToMyPC could be for vacationing professionals," says Brian Donahoo,
GoToMyPC's senior vice president. "One user closed a business deal
in Moscow -- by having access to all files and archived information
that he otherwise wouldn't have, he was able to finalize a time-sensitive
contract. Another user connected to his computer while vacationing
on a cruise ship. While sipping his Bahama Mama cocktail he was
able to log in through the ship's satellite Internet connection
and communicate with his office from 2,000 miles out at sea."
Whether vacationing professionals want to be connected to the office
or need to be, remote access solutions give them the options and
instant access they need, while simplifying the travel process.
