Houston is the Perfect Spot to Lose Those Winter Blues
by ARA Content
(ARA) - Houston, Texas has long been synonymous with the oil industry
and is often in the public eye with the presence of the National
Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
But with a vibrant downtown, Theater District and Museum District,
this cosmopolitan jewel of the Gulf Coast offers visitors more to
see than ever. That's the message the Greater Houston Convention
and Visitors Bureau wants travelers to hear.
From museum exhibits to exciting sports, Houston is an exciting
destination for travelers seeking the unique and spirited sights
of the Gulf Coast. And The Greater Houston Convention and Visitors
Bureau has great weekend getaway packages starting at just $79.
Check out the following lineup of events:
- The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston will host Star Wars: The Magic
of Myth March 11- May 27, 2001. This crowd-pleasing exhibition
features original conceptual and production artwork, characters,
costumes, models, and props on loan from Lucasfilm Ltd.
- Gulf Greyhound Park is in the midst of a $500,000 facelift of
its 1,900 seat Horizon Clubhouse. The remodeling work will be
done in four phases and should be completed early next year. Park
officials said all levels of the track will remain open.
- Plans for Houston's new downtown Convention Center Hotel are
continuing on schedule. Both a developer and architect have been
selected for the project. The new hotel, which should be up and
running by 2003, is expected to add 1,200 more rooms to the 1,800
hotel rooms currently downtown.
- Expansion of the George R. Brown Convention Center will coincide
with the construction of a new hotel. A $110 million, 500,000-square-foot
expansion will nearly double the current meeting and exhibit space
at the convention center. And this summer the convention center
unveiled four new balconies that overlook the Houston skyline.
The nearly 4,000 square foot balconies can accommodate up to 300
guests for a reception and 200 guests for a seated meal.
- Ground breaking of Reliant Center also took place this summer.
The 1.4-million-square-foot exhibit hall is scheduled for completion
in 2002.
- Football is returning to Houston. Stadium construction is underway
for the city's new NFL expansion team, the Houston Texans.
